The Department was established in 1956. The first Head of the Department was Professor Maria Kielczewska-Zaleska followed by Professor Kazimierz Dziewoński and Professor Piotr Korcelli. Since 1999 the Head of Department is Professor Grzegorz Węcławowicz. Till the year 2000 the official name of the Department was: "Department of Settlement and Population Geography".

The research activities of the Department include the following topics: spatial structure of cities and their socio-economic transformation, migrations (modeling and forecasts), demographic change, as well as geography of transport, trade and services, electoral and transformation of settlement systems.

In the last few years the scientific activity of the Department of Urban and Population Geography focussed on the following reaserch topics:
