(project PRELUDIUM)

A lee wave is an atmospheric gravity wave aroused in the flow of air over a mountain range. In foreland of the Polish Tatra Mts. during foehnwind the amplitude of wave can be up to several hundreds of meters and wavelength can reach about a dozen kilometers.

The project involves the pioneering studies of the lee wave of the Polish Tatra Mts. on the basis of the measurements of atmospheric pressure. The main aim of the project is to answer the question if the lee wave in study area causes changes in near-surface atmospheric pressure. It was hypothesized that: 1) during the lee wave positive and negative atmospheric pressure anomalies occur, 2) they are arranged alternately and correspond to descending and ascending wave currents.

If the impact of the lee wave on near-surface atmospheric pressure confirms, the relationship between the value of the anomalies and the following parameters will be investigated: the distance from the Tatra Mts., the wavelength, the speed of wave currents, the vertical gradient of air temperature.

The project requires meteorological network of the near-surface atmospheric pressure measurements and wind conditions. It will consists of 10 stations: 5 stations founded from the project and 5 existing stations of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management. Stations will be located along the transect Kasprowy Wierch-NowyTarg, oriented perpendicular to the Tatra Mts.

Lenticular clouds will be used for detection of the lee wave and for determining the location of ascending and descending wave currents. Special sky photography system granted from the project will be implement to get cloud images. The system will enable taking the spherical panoramas. Satellite imagery as well as data from meteorological stations on Kasprowy Wierch and Zakopane will complete the data.

Wave currents velocity will be measured during glider flights. Organization of the flights will be entrusted to employees and pilots of the Aeroclub in Nowy Targ. Data on meteorological conditions in the upper troposphere will be also provided by aerological surveys (station Poprad-Gánovce).

In the case of positive results, the meteorological network of the near-surface atmospheric pressure measurements will become a tool for the lee wave studies with a wide spectrum of usage. The application of atmospheric pressure measurements will greatly facilitate the study of the lee wave and reduce its cost, since they will be conducted on the basis of automated ground-based meteorological stations.

The project is primarily scientific, but its positive results may also have practical value. Meteorological network of the near-surface atmospheric pressure measurements can be used in meteorological service for aviation.
