Lacustrine laminated sediments are an ideal source for high resolution paleoclimatic reconstruction. The methodological advancement resulting from the merger of microcuts with the ч-XRF analysis has led to very accurate proxy data of annual to sub-annual resolution (Zolitschka, 2006, Brauer et al. 2009). During the preparation of the map sheet of Stara Kiszewa of the Detailed Geological Map of Poland in scale 1:50 000 (Błaszkiewicz 2003) bottom sediments of Lake Czechowskie, located in the northern part of the Tuchola Forest in the immediate foreground of the maximum range of the Pomeranian phase ice sheet, were identified and preliminary documented.

These studies allowed to document the lamination in the shallower overdeepening of the lake covering the sediments from Late Glacial and Early Holocene. In 2009, an informal initiative (Błaszkiewicz, Brauer) was undertaken to use the probe Uwitec to collect a full 11-m profile of bottom sediments from the deepest part of the lake basin (33 m). The sample was taken to the Laboratory of GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ) in Potsdam, where it appeared that all the collected cores included very well-preserved lamination. The preliminary microlithofacial analysis of thin plates confirmed its annual nature. The beginning of accumulation of lacustrine sediments in Lake Czechowskie was palynologically dated as Bølling (Błaszkiewicz 2005).

Biogenic deposits lie directly on fluvioglacial sands. The so-called correlative strata in the micro and meso scale were used to put two core sequences together to form one core. The entire 11-m sequence of the collected deposits contains a continuous accumulation of calcite laminas. M. Słowiński, a partner in this project, as part of his four-month DAAD stipend in early 2011 at the GFZ in Potsdam, and under the scientific supervision of A. Brauer, also a partner in this project, studied microlithofacial analysis of lacustrine laminas. Moreover, he preliminarily analysed the sediments of the top 1.5 m of the core collected in 2009. There is a visible variation in annual and decadal lamination, which is a result of climate change. The seasonal variation in thickness of the layers is very well correlated with abrupt changes in sedimentation rate, and thus short-term fluctuations related to the early Medieval warming and the Little Ice Age are shown.

The previously conducted field work and laboratory analysis of sediments pose a sound basis for conducting detailed paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental studies, included in this project, for Late Glacial and Holocene based on the record in lacustrine sediments with an annual resolution. The scope of the research designed in this project was mainly developed on the basis of past experience, both of the group working on the laminated lacustrine sediments in Lake Gościąż (Ralska-Jasiewiczowa et al., 1998) and the group working on the sediments of maar lakes in the Eifel Massif (Brauer et al., 2009). The field work of the applicants will include the following:

  1. The geomorphological and hydrological mapping of the catchment basin of Lake Czechowskie, analysis of thermal structure and mixing of the lake, the study of hydrodynamic phenomena and processes that shape the water mass, and testing physical and chemical characteristics of lake water to be carried out by M. Błaszkiewicz and P. Gierszewski.
  2. The detailed study of lacustrine sediments in the basin of Lake Czechowskie. It is planned to drill 12 boreholes along two transects intersecting in the lake overdeepening. Moreover, four drillings in the deepest part of the lake will be made. The probe Uwitec of up to 130 m range, owned by the Department of Geomorphology and Hydrology of Lowlands (branch of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization of the Polish Academy of Sciences), will be used. This will be carried out by the whole team.

The laboratory analysis of the collected lacustrine sediments will have an interdisciplinary character, concordant with the paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental "multiproxy" research ongoing in the world. It will include the following:

  1. Microlithofacial analysis of laminated sediments based on thin plates of these sediments (A. Brauer and M. Słowiński).
  2. Varve chronology – varves will be electronically counted several times from microscopic images of thin plates. The obtained scales of varve chronology from different profiles extracted from lacustrine sediments of the basin of Lake Czechowskie will be correlated (A. Brauer, M. Błaszkiewicz, M. Słowiński).
  3. Cs137 and Pb210 as well as magnetic susceptibility analysis will be carried out. The obtained results will be compared. The quantities of light and dark varves calculated for the dated parts of the cores will allow to determine the sedimentation rate on an annual basis for different periods of time, ranging from approximately 25 years (the "peak" of 137Cs related to the nuclear explosion at Chernobyl in 1986), to about 48 years (the "peak" of 137Cs for the maximum period of thermonuclear tests in 1963) and for the period about 120 years ago with a calibrated 137Cs 210Pbex (W. Froehlich).
  4. C-14 AMS dating of 30 samples will be carried out. The dating will be commissioned to the Laboratory of C-14 in Poznan. Radiocarbon dating will be used to support, and in doubtful cases complement and correlate the chronological varve scale for individual cores.
  5. Geochemical analyses will indicate the basic components of the sediment by determining the content of organic (TOC) and inorganic carbon (TIC), nitrogen, sulphur, as well as biogenic and terrigenous silica with the use of the elemental analyzers. The entire sediment core will be scanned using an XRF scanner owned by the GFZ in Potsdam (A. Brauer, P. Gierszewski).
  6. Diatom analyses will be performed at the Department of Quaternary Geology and Paleogeography of the University of Adam Mickiewicz by M. Lutyńska.
  7. Cladocera analyses – both the preparation of the sediment and analysis of Cladocera subfossil remains will be done by I. Zawiska from the Institute of Geography of Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw.
  8. Analysis of stable isotopes 13C/12C and 18O/16O will be carried out.
  9. Pollen analyses will be performed by B. Noryśkiewicz, A. Filbrandt-Czaja, and M. Obręmbska.
  10. Plant macrofossil analysis – it is being planned to analyse the top section of the profile which documents the beginnings of the development of Lake Czechowskie (M. Słowiński).

As part of paleoclimatic reconstruction a particular attention will be given to short-term climate change of Late Glacial and Holocene related to both disruptions in the North Atlantic thermohaline circulation (the Late Glacial periods of Dryas, the Holocene "Youngest Dryas" and episode 8.2) and the so-called Holocene Bond cycles, including Little Ice Age, probably induced by variable solar activity. The indirect purpose will be the detailed analysis of changes in various components of the natural environment, both in terms of natural processes and increasing anthropopressure in Holocene. Lake Czechowskie is located along the transect west-east line leading from the lakes in Germany under the influence of oceanic climate to the Baltic States with significant elements of continental climate. This creates a good perspective for capturing the regional response to global climate change. The authors are confident that the analysis of laminated lacustrine sediments of Lake Czechowskie, proposed in this project, will contribute significantly to the current world debate on the issue of global climate change and its impact on the environment. The ultimate goal of the research is to identify natural changes caused by climate fluctuations and human impact on the catchment basin of the lake. The study will be based on an independent and thorough chronology of varves. The analysis of the changes recorded in the sediment has a great potential for improving the knowledge on the past climate of Poland.
