The goal of the project was to complete a 3D terrestrial scanning system suited for landscape scale and earth-science research. The project met Ministry of Science and Higher Education requirements of capital expenditures serving the purposes of scientific reaserch and was founded accordingly.

The system was built around core Riegl VZ-4000 impulse terrestrial scanner featuring several desirable capabilities, like long range (up to 4km) and multiple target processing. This new technology, unique on the terrestrial devices market, is among few inventions brought from Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) into TLS devices. Next comes so called full waveform detection, which helps recover additional information about multiple objects surveyed, and unlimited number of MTA (Multiple Time Around) zones. We are proud to be the first owner of this device in Poland.

The next element of the system, necessary for precise placement of scanner and repeatable readouts, is a pair of Trimble real-time kinematic GPSs which comprise of R4 receivers and TSC3 controllers. This configuration anables two modes of operation: first under ASG-Eupos reference network and second - in areas uncovered by correction signal (possibly outside of Poland). In the second case, one receiver serves as local reference station, the other as a mobile receiver (a "rover").

The outdoor elements of TLS system are complemented by workstations for point cloud processing and storage server for NAS file archiving. Network-licenced versions of software include: RiscanPro with extra Riegl modules, LP360 Advanced from QCoherent, Cyclone from Leica as well as ESRI ArcGIS Advanced with extensions.

  • high mountains environmental dynamics, including slope morphodynamics of Tatra Mountains and east Himalaya piedmont zone fluvial processes,
  • research of landslides and their role in shaping the slope surfaces in flysch Carpathians,
  • research of landslides in Polish Lowland,
  • shore zone of inland artificial lakes research,
  • research of fluvial environment-related geodynamic processes,
  • geobotanics and landscape ecology,
  • rural areas cultural heritage research,
  • dead wood volume assesment.
