Publishing

General information

IGSO PAS Publishing House offers a wide range of publications — scholarly journals, publishing series, monographs and specialist studies — presenting original and valuable works in the broadly understood field of geography, including physical geography, socio-economic geography, and issues related to spatial development. The publications are theoretical, empirical and methodological in nature, documenting the results of research conducted by the Institute’s staff as well as by authors from Polish and foreign research centres.

The current publishing offer includes three journals: the quarterly journals Geographia Polonica and Polish Geographical Review, and the semi-annual journal Europa XXI, as well as the monograph series Geographical Studies and other publications. The research results presented in these publications concern transformations of the natural environment, socio-economic processes, regional development, urban and rural geography, climate change, and landscape and geomorphological issues.

An important element of the publishing activity of IGSO PAS is the dissemination of the achievements of Polish geography and spatial sciences in international circulation; therefore, some publications are issued in English.

The IGSO PAS Publishing House follows ethical principles based on the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). These recommendations are available on the COPE website.

All current publications are made available in open access under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) or Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0) licences.

Electronic versions of the publications are available in the Digital Repository of Scientific Institutes (RCIN).

Dissemination of scholarly publications

In fulfilling the obligations arising from the Act of 7 November 1996 on Legal Deposit Copies, the IGSO PAS Publishing House provides authorised libraries with copies of all publications it issues. The purpose of this obligation is to document and archive national publishing output and to ensure public access to publications in library collections. Legal deposit copies are sent to 15 libraries indicated in the regulation to the Act, including, among others, the National Library and the Jagiellonian Library, which are obliged to permanently archive one copy. As a result, IGSO PAS publications are preserved for future generations of researchers and readers and are included in the national bibliographic information system.

As part of disseminating the publishing output of IGSO PAS, the Central Library of Geography and Environmental Protection conducts publication exchange with other research centres, mainly geographical ones, in Poland and abroad. Scientific monographs published, for example, within the Prace Geograficzne series are sent to 13 Polish and 17 foreign institutions. Among Polish institutions, these include the Scientific Library of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Polish Academy of Sciences in Kraków, the Scientific Information Centre and Academic Library in Katowice, the Natural Sciences Library of the Jagiellonian University, the Library of Collegium Geographicum of Adam Mickiewicz University, as well as the libraries of the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies of the University of Warsaw and the Institute of Geography and Regional Development of the University of Wrocław. Foreign institutions include, among others: the Library of Congress – Germanic and Slavic Division, the Société de Géographie, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin – Universitätsbibliothek, Zweigbibliothek Naturwissenschaften, Lietuvos mokslų akademijos Vrublevskių biblioteka, and the Slovenská akadémia vied – Geografický ústav. Publication exchange is an important element of the Institute’s publishing and library activity, supporting the promotion and dissemination of the achievements of IGSO PAS within the national and international scholarly community, as well as fostering cooperation with research centres and specialist libraries.
