Department of Urban and Population Studies
Our research unit, the Department of Urban and Population Studies, was founded in 1956, and its initial name was the Department of Settlement and Population Studies. Over the past years it was headed by the following professors (in subsequent order): Maria Kiełczewska-Zaleska, Kazimierz Dziewoński and Piotr Korcelli. In the years 1999-2012, the Department was led by Prof. Grzegorz Węcławowicz, who on 1st January 2013 was replaced in this position by Assoc. Prof. Marek Więckowski.
At the moment, the Department has on its staff 16 persons. Also, there are 8 postgraduate students that have been admitted into their PhD programs.
The primary focus of our research, adhering closely to the convention of urban social geography, is centered around tracing the mechanisms of urban and metropolitan areas transformations taking place in Poland and Central Europe. Also, the Department carries out research studies into, broadly conceived, land management as well as regional, transport and tourism geography.
