Integrated Monitoring of Natural Environment (SWEX)

SWEX

Under the auspices of the European Space Agency (ESA), for the purposes of SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity), a national consortium SWEX was established under the name: “SWEX – Soil, Water and Exchange of Energy”. The consortium purposes to provide overland validation data necessary for interpretation of microwave pictures transmitted by SMOS (ESA) space probe, which started to provide satellite imagery of the Earth surface in November 2009. The orbital mission is to provide information about water resources of the Earth surface, variable in time at different stages of hydrological cycle. Research studies dealing essentially with changes in soil moisture against the backdrop of other components of water circulation are carried out worldwide in 40 countries.
In Poland, the consortium was established, including such institutions as:
1) the Space Research Center PAS – coordination,
2) Institute of Geodesy and Cartography,
3) Institute of Agrophysics PAS,
4) Institute of Geodesy and Cartography of the Warsaw University of Technology,
5) Institute of Technology and Life Sciences
6) Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization PAS

Period of project performance: 1 January 2009 – 31 December 2012
A national coordinator of SWEX project – Dr. Wojciech Marczewski from the Space Research Centre PAS in Warsaw
Financed - by the European Space Agency (ESA).
